Claims against hospitals

The NHS is a cherished institution. Its hospitals and clinics treat more than 1 million patients every day. The vast majority receive excellent care. Sadly problems sometimes occur with treatment and occasionally these are because of failings on the part of clinicians, equipment or the Trusts themselves.

In the period between April 2009 and March 2010 there were 62,800 reported incidents in which patients suffered harm because of errors or failings. Fortunately many incidents did not result in significant harm but some undoubtedly caused injury; disability or death.

Those who suffer harm in this way want an explanation or apology or to ensure that the mistake is not repeated. The majority are not primarily interested in recovering compensation. Nevertheless for some patients this is the only way that they can begin the process of rebuilding their lives.
